Planting A Large Flower Garden? How To Ensure Your Flowers Will Grow Healthy

If you are planning to put a large flower garden on your property, this is a lot of work from creating the flower garden to planting the flowers. Because of this, the last thing you want is for the flowers to not do well for you. Fortunately, there are many things you can do to make sure this does not happen, two of which are listed below.

Use Topsoil

When you are finished installing the flower garden, put a layer of topsoil over it. This is beneficial as topsoil is made of organic matter, also known as decomposed plant matter. This matter helps your plants grow strong and healthy. To use topsoil, spread it over the soil that is in your flower garden. Use a tiller to combine the topsoil with the current soil. When you are finished, add one more layer of topsoil to the garden.

Topsoil can also help improve drainage in your flower garden. If you get a lot of rain and water pools on top of the garden, this can be bad for your plants. If you have topsoil on your garden, the water will drain into the flower garden instead and get down to the roots where it is needed the most.

Use Compost

You can use compost on its own or you can mix it with the topsoil that you purchase. Compost is made of organic matter, such as shredded twigs, leaves, and scraps. You can also purchase bags of compost at a garden center, which is generally made from cow manure. You will often hear gardeners refer to compost as "black gold" because it helps keep your flowers healthy and growing well.

Compost adds nitrogen to the soil in your flower garden. Nitrogen is needed to make your flowers healthy and green.  You can make your own compost from things you already have at home, such as food scraps, if you do not want to buy it. If you mix the compost with the topsoil, add an extra layer of compost over your garden when you are finished. The compost breaks down slowly, so you will not have to replace it during the growing season.

Along with using topsoil and compost, add a layer of mulch to your garden. Mulch will keep weeds away, which will save you a lot of time. Mulch also helps keep your flowers retain more water.
